What message is your church sending?

If you are at all interested in American dialogue on religion, subscribe to the CNN Belief blog.  It is great.

The church should be a place of healing, of hope, of restoration.  Sometimes the church gets things wrong and people get hurt in the process.

Two out of three Americans believe gay people commit suicide at least partly because of messages coming out of churches and other places of  worship, a survey released Thursday found.

More than four out of 10 Americans say the message coming out of churches about gay people is negative, and about the same number say those messages  contribute “a lot” to negative perceptions of gay and lesbian people.

Catholics were the most critical of their own churches’ messages on homosexuality, while white evangelical Christians gave their churches the  highest grades, the survey found.

This quote comes from a recent article on the aforementioned blog.  I am sure we could poke holes in the survey methodology or try to pretend that the poll is ‘way off’ and ‘completely unfair’ demonstrating ‘the liberal anti-Christian bias.’  But, as a semi-professional church person, these numbers do not surprise me.   I think we have done a pretty horrible job, particularly in non-affirming Christian communities, in this area.

I hope we get better so that it gets better.
