At our canvas group last night, we introduced the season of Lent by observing Ash Wednesday. During Lent, our group is going to explore what it means to be human, created in the image of God. Last night we talked about the traditional Ash Wednesday observances rooted in the curse of Genesis 3:19 – dust, ashes, and mourning – and held that tradition in tension with the goodness of the created order, the idea that humans are formed in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27) and, as followers of Christ, are being transformed into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18).
While administering the ashes, we offered each other a modification of the tradition Ash Wednesday phrase.
Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return
You bear the image of God and are being transformed into the image of Christ
