MP520 – Thursday Week 10 Reflections (Church as a flow)

For our last class period, we talked about the future.  Arjun Appadurai argues that the human imagination is now a social practice, and it is illustrated in 5 dimensions – ethnoscapes, mediascapes, technoscapes, finanscapes, and ideoscapes.  This is a very abstract theory, but we discussed it in terms the diminishing importance of physical place, and the enlarging of abstract space.  The challenge for churches comes when the places we inhabit are becoming smaller and less significant, and the secular spaces are growing exponentially.  Ryan talked about how churches are going to have to work hard to exist with the flows, or practices, of society, and Christians need to start understanding church as what happens whenever two or three Christians are gathered together, no matter which place or space they are physically located in.

So…kind of abstract, but really fascinating/interesting stuff…
