MP520 – Tuesday Class Reflection, Week 5 (Who do you eat with?)

Hard to believe that Jesus turned the world upside down by eating with the wrong people.

But He did.

In class we talked a bit about the culture of table fellowship. Who you ate with spoke volumes about who you were and how pure you were. Eating with unclean people made you unclean. In that Jewish culture, you did not want to be unclean.

When you were unclean, you lost your right to have any access/interaction with the Temple.  The Temple controlled the social/political/economic power of the Jewish people.

Jesus recognized that there was power within the Temple, but he didn’t seek that power.  Instead, he sought to transform that power subversively.

Do you think he succeeded?

  1. Excellent – Love the turning the world upside down quote . . . Mike Frost has a whole chapter on “The Missional Table” in his new book “Exiles” – an area we have to explore and DO!

    cheers!
